                                                       Visiting the Queen`s Campus

It`s winter and with it comes the snow. But phenomenon is not excuse not to visit some places that will contribute with my personal increasing. This time, I had the opportunity to visit St. John`s University -Queens Campus.
I could feel a contagious atmosphere . The place is huge, with a lot of accommodations, sports courts, square , dormitories, cafeteria, restaurants, auditoriums, patios full of snow everywhere, large classes, and even a chapel where people can demonstrate their beliefs. This scenery is unfamiliar for me, but it is an intriguing phenomenon.
There are students from all of the world, each one trying to reach his/her objective - the graduation. I am a Brazilian English teacher and I will take some advantages of this cultural exchange to renew my thoughts, knowledge and, at last my practice. Changing the environment where I have been teaching and get good results from the teaching process.

This Monday we could visit the Queens campus of St. John's University. We were very excited to do it, since we knew it was in the schedule, and that was very nice.
The campus is so big and with many different departments and interesting places! One of the most surprising things was the size of the cafeteria, and the variety it has, especially comparing to Manhattan campus, which just have one option - what means there's no option...=)
That picture bellow is from the cafeteria area with my friends Rita and Lucelia, after a nice spaghetti and a delicious donuts there!

What is New York City?
There's no possibly answer to describe the Capital of the World... any closed answer would diminish the Empire City. There are so many things to do and to see that one could go crazy in the Capital of Everything.

The other day we went for a walk around the Brooklyn Bridge
The Brooklyn Bridge opened in 1883, and once it was the longest suspension bridge in the world- nowadays the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge in Japan has got this title - , likewise it was the first steel-wire suspension bridge constructed. This bridge connects the dense borough of Manhattan and the most populous one, the Brooklyn.  has a main span of 1,595.5 feet (486.3 m) and more than 120,000 vehicles, 4,000 pedestrians and 3,100 bicyclists cross the Brooklyn Bridge every day. And inside the Melting Pot it is believed to be a symbol of the optimism of the time.

However, the beauty of sunset and the lights turning on while I was walking across the giant bridge was exactly what caught my eyes. I know that I am inside the City That Never Sleeps, and maybe it happens exactly because there is such an intense light everywhere that nobody could ever close his/her eyes.

Hi!
Today morning I chose a very special place for sharing some information about it with you. I know some Brazilian teachers have been there, but who hasn’t gone there, please, don’t miss it!  It is the Statue of Liberty in Statue Island., a gift from French people to Americans for celebrating freedom and democracy.  You have three different options for visiting it!
First, you can take a red line of Metro to South Ferry Station that is at Battery Park, take a Ferry to Statue Island, there is a public one. Arriving at the Statue Park you can walk along the Island, take some pictures, and admire the wonderful sightseeing of Manhattan Island and the statue.
Second, you can buy a ticket  for 18, visit the pedestal of the Statue and the museum of the Statue that shows some detailed information about the transportation, project and uplifting of the Statue. When you are going back to New York, the Ferry stops in a special Island, Ellis Island, for visiting  the Immigration Museum. I have learned a lot about immigration in the USA!!!
Third, I think it is an amazing one, it is visiting the crown of the Statue, but for visiting it, you should buy a ticket for 28 in advance because only four people can stay at the place at a time. . Ah!!! Don’t forget that you have to be in good physical condition, you are supposed to walk up about 355 stair treads. There is no elevator inside the Statue.
Obtain knowledge and culture visiting traditional places in New York!!

A mix of saddeness and emotion... Today I had the opportunity to visit the 9/11 Memorial here in New York City... At this place there used to be the two most known towers in the world: the World Trade Center... Today, the scenario gives place to two pools (the south and the north one) built in honor to those who died during the terrorism attack on September, 11th., 2005... Looking at the almost 3,000 names engraved all around the pools, I could feel how terrible that day was not only for the Americans but for the whole world...

This week we had the opportunity to visit St. John’s campus in Queens. First,
we took two trains and a bus to get there – about 40 minutes from where we

are staying. The ride was kind of fun because it was our first experience going to another borough in New York City – it is considered the most diverse one. I was amazed by the size of the campus. It really looks like a real campus – so big and so crowded! Some St. John’s students welcomed us and took us around the campus. We visited a lot of places: gym, church, souvenir store, shrine, dorms, cafeteria, and all sorts of different classrooms. Despite of my age, I would like to be a graduate student again, just because of the environment – it is so favorable to studying. But there is always something that really drags our attention. St. John’s Core Values. In my opinion, it is the extremely important to have solid values to run a school. It is not easy dealing with people’s lives. Thus, having straight forward values make everyone’s education more meaningful. It is such a privilege to make part St. John’s community.

9/11 Memorial

Visiting the 9/11 Memorial is something beyond feelings and imagination can tell. There you can feel a bit of sadness from each name you read on each metal plaque. Thousand  of people who miss their relatives form this tragic and devastating image in the history of America.
a lot of people could say is just corny to speak " I feel sorry for those people", but that's just about what you can feel when you are in that memorial.
Being there makes you think for a moment how the souls of many now rest in God's side and that that event has brought once again the sense of unit once weakened in Americans hearts.
The place is nearly full constructed and it's purpose is and always will be to make people proud of their ones who died so that the freedom and ever existing love could last forever in the heart of those who believe in freedom and christian values until the end of the days.

Post 3 - Xavier

There were many years that I didn`t study, since the university (more than ten years ago) and since I started to work. I`ve never been in USA, so I didn`t have any opportunity to speak. Then, my English was (maybe it is yet) bad. Because of this, I have many dificults here to understand people conversations and in class. In classroom, in the most of the time, I`m shy.
Although, I`ve learned a lot and this experience has been marvelous for me. I noted that I`m improving my listening a lot, but I have to improve my speaking too. I could just to speak English here, certainly I`d obtain more success.
About my weekend, it was fantastic. Last friday, after class, I visited MOMA, The Museum of Modern Art. I think art makes my eyes keened. I love it. I could see some paints that I admired all my life, so I almost cried.
On Sunday, I visited Metropolitan Museum of Art and it was also very good. But I couldn`t see everything because Metropolitan is so big and I like to see each work carefully. I have to come back there.
Yesterday, I and my group went to Queens Campus of St. John`s University, accompanied by teacher Aaron Royer. I loved this place, especially a room where students can access internet, talk to others, and listen to piano.
Finally, today we learned to make a website in Weebly. It is very cool and I think it will be so good for my students and for my classes.
Finally, in this week, I want to study more and more...

                                                           New York Public Library
One of the things that called my attention while visiting this wonderful place was the way how everything was explained by our guide. The woman who conducted us through that amazing building seemed to be a part of it. She knew so well about history, dates and so many other peculiarities and talked with such security that we were all conducted to the time when everything begun. She talked about the opportunity that many poor people had to change their lives, having access to this place. We could see the great amount of people using not only books and enciclopedias but also the computers and internet. This visit was very well recorded with a lot of pictures that I will share with my students when I come back to Brazil.

The NYPL visit

In our first Friday in New York  we visited the New York Public Library. Cherry Chan from St. John`s University took us to the library and Ms.Ellen guided us there. It was the biggest library that  I have visited in my life. I was very impressed with its dimension, very beautiful architecture and organization. There is a public library in my city too, but it`s much smaller and I can`t compare with  the NYPL. I observed  that this library is connected with social campaigns like aids activism and others. It was founded in 19th century, there are many ancient books, videos, documents and approximately 53 millions items.
And I`m sure that it`s an incentive to people read, because when I get into the subway there is at least one person reading a book, a magazine...

Hi!
One of the most wonderful experiences in my life it was to see and touch the snow here in New York City.
As we are in the Winter, I was completely sure that snow would come soon, and I was looking forward to see it.
After a few days I was here, a light snow came down. And then, it came down intensely the second time. Wow!!!!! I'll never forget that amazing and exciting event!

Hello, my wonderful colleagues!

My second week in New York was fascinating! I did so many things and visited interesting and beautiful places. The first I would like to share with you is the Museum of Modern Art!!

Hey, you do not believe in me, but I was with Picasso, Monet, and many others famous painters, architects and sculptors. According to some extra information I have read from MoMA site, the museum was built in 1929 as in Educational institution. It is considered an important place for research by sustaining a library, archives, and conservation laboratory that are recognized as in international centers of studies.

Well, when I turned the first on the right inside the museum, wow…how nice a work!!! Immediately it reminded my students and multimodality studies. Can you imagine to talk to the students about this amazing picture!!! How significant it is!! Small, medium, big luggages!!! Is somebody travelling??? The owls on some  luggages!!! Do they mean knowledge!! It is really fascinating, and of course, I took a picture what I have a  pleasure to share it !!!!

My second week in New York was totally different. I saw snow first time in my whole life. Then I went to Metropolitan Museum, MOMA and The Statue of Liberty. Everything was amazing! Our teacher, Dorothy, asked us to research about four famous states/cities in the USA and to present in the classroom. In addition, we have had excellent explanations about "Tool kit for teaching Pronunciation" and "High-Tech Ideas in a Low-Tech Environment" that they will be useful in my professional development.

Hi, all

One of our latest visits was to know the Public Library of New York. The place is amazing and it`s impossible to describe it`s beauty just in words. The architecture is so impressive that one only visit is not enough to explore. The number of books, maps and different documents there, from what we saw, is unpredictable.
It`s nice to see people interested in reading and going to libraries. It`s a little different from Brazil, where I live. It isn`t usual to read so frequently as I see here in New York. Since I arrived here I`m impressed with people reading in all kind of places, like in subways and in the trains themselves, even standing up, as well as people who are living in the streets and subways, having many books with them.
I hope my country make a good job for encouraging children to read and learn from the books as I see here in the streets and in that beautiful library!

 Awesome!!!

The New York Public Library was an awe-inspiring sight. I loved - an AMAZING experience! I've never been in such big and complete public library. A guide, an old and worderful lady showed the library to us.
According to Wikipedia that I read the New York Public Library has a public library system in New York City. Also you can find at least 53 million items. It is the second largest public library in the United States.
We walked along the halls and visited some rooms as: Rose Main Reading Room, the Catalog Room,The ABC of It: Why Children's Books Matter Exhibition and others wondeful room. The last room I visited was the Souvenirs Shop where I bought some for me and my family.

The New York Public Library is a hub of knowlegde, culture, and communication, Where we can find many intersting things about the USA history and the wolrd as well. Another point about it is the foundations which privide a great support that allow the library to maintain areas of service to the public in any kinds. It worths go there and check it out! A motivational place to spend a good time.

POST 2 - MILTON FRANÇA

Hi, friends,

On January 17th we visited the New York Public Library, the second largest public library in the whole country (the largest is the Library of Congress in Washington), founded in 1895 and with more than fifty-one million books, e-books, historical collections, among other things. I was really impressed by that huge and beautiful construction and all the objects it has.

One of the historical documents that the library has is the letter Christopher Columbus wrote in 1493 about the discovery of America.

It was an unforgettable experience to visit a library with such an enormous collection (and it is always expanding), quite different from the one in my hometown. What a pity!!!

Dear Fellows,
Last Friday I went to two museums which were really interesting. The first one was the Times Square Museum & Visitors Center, where there were some famous Broadway show costumes. The most beautiful is the “Gypsy Robe”, a kind of colorful and shiny dress with so many pictures and hand writing related to gypsy’s life. Pretty interesting! Another amazing thing there is the “Hope & Dreams” wall, there I could read things like: “I wish nobody felt hungry and lonely.” “Peace and health to everybody.” The words made me think how those people would be… Sensitive, for sure!

The second was the American Folk Art Museum, there I saw wonderful piece of work, one in special got my attention, it was a dress made by Bibhu Mohapatra, that was inspired in a little pattern book, drew by an unknown sailor. Although there were some subjectiveness  in his work, at the same time, it is self-explained piece of art. I loved it.

Hi, fellows !

I felt amazed and  lost in the ' knowledge world' of the  New York Public Library. Its History was so great and I am not going to tell about it because you can find all the data in the Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. But I have to try to describe what I felt . First of all this Library is  one of the five most important libraries in the United States and its marble bricks came from Greece and its walls is very large. My eyes did not believe what I was seeing at that moment, the Library's architecture is fantastic! An important point of view, in my opinion, everyone is looking up the mean of something ancient or new. That is the meditation for knowledge. Finally I can, must say a good country to live is done by the  knowledge from the books. See you again!!

Hi my dear friends!

This has been my second week in NYC. It's been a great experience for me. I've learned a lot and now I know why so many people decide to study English abroad. I love my classes and my teachers. My classmates are really funny. I've also met people from other countries at the domitory. My refinenment classes have taught me a lot about idioms. My vocabulary has mproved a lot! The workshop about pronunciation was really good. We had a great time learning how to include different techniques in our classes. Joyce Mandell has a large experience in teaching and I learned a lot with her. I'll miss you all!

Hi, everybody!
This is my second week in New York, and it was amazing. I visited two small and beautiful museums.
Firstly I went to Folk art Museum. It is a museum that shows traditional folk art and there we can find sculptures and the work of international self-taught artists. I took some pictures of artists works like a very famous Brazilian artist called Fabio Costa, who is attracted by Religious motifs from the 18th century until the present.
The artists use a variety of materials (resources) to make beautiful clothes, sculptures and others.
In some afternoons there are some kind of music exhibition that is free for everybody who wants to appreciate music in a beautiful place.
After that I went to Times Square Museum and Visitor Center. In that place we can see clothes used in some famous musicals and you can also see the Centennial Ball Light Show on New Year's Eve and there is a small film about it. If you wish you can write your hopes and dreams and stamp it like I'm doing in this picture.

POST 2 - MIRANDA

Hi, PDPI fellows!

I have learned a lot from my instructors Aaron Royer (introduction to blogs), Donna Moski and Debbie Coutavas (English refinement classes) since January 13 (the beginnig of the course). And the past academic week was even more profitable. In addition to the excellent classes that our oficial instructors have taught us, I had two very instructive and hands on workshops, and the first meeting, out of five, with  Dra Jennifer Scully on TESOL methodology for high school students. The first workshop, on Pronunciation, was presented by Joyce Mandell, a very dynamic and enthusiastic instructor. She taught, not only me, but the whole group, I'm sure, precious lessons on recurrent pronunciation problems for Brazilian students of English, in a very lively and engaging atmosphere. The second one was presented by, not less enthusiastic and dynamic, Sue Peterson, the Adjunct Coordinator of St John's University. She taught how to use "Tech ideas in low tech classrooms". One of the most important lessons I learned from her, was that we can't skip (ignore) teaching topics on technology (social networking, for example) just because the students do not have access to technology at the moment the teaching takes place. sooner or later it will get into their homes and lives, and they'd better be prepared to deal with it intelligently. From Jennifer Scully I learned that for good class management we have to keep our students busy, and the DO NOW activities are very efficient  strategies.
Besides all classroom instructions, I have also learned a lot of  the tours I have taken with my classmates during the last two weeks. One very nice tour was through Central Park, this unique natural environment right in the middle of New York metropolitan area, a place where people can jog, run, go on a picnic or just sit down on a pathside bench,  read a good book or relax. New York City, with all its diversity (linguistic, cultural, religious...) has been an everlasting experience for me.

                                                   New York Public Library

Visiting New York City is an amazing experience. There are many interesting things to do here, without mentioning the snow. In this season seams that the human beings pay close attention in each step, movement to go on. Seeing  this phenomenon to happen during the day, night, makes me think in the value of life, the power which does the world turns. In another words, it is a magnificent spectacle.
This week we had the opportunity to visit the New York Public Library and enrich my cultural values. I could notice the importance that the United States gives for the cultural aspects, starting by the huge and marvelous building that values  those who help to build this monument. There are rooms equipped with a lot of computers where students, foreigners can research and get in touch with famous writers` writing an thoughts in their works.
If a person wants to gift someone, that is the right place to find souvenirs from different places of  New York. On the other hand, the `Frescoes` of two rooms overwhelmed me. the details, the painting, the color, the work itself made my thoughts fly to other worlds and increase my sensibility towards the arts.
In short , it was a relevant contribution of PDPI program to enhance our knowledge in order to have a narrow dialogue between the English and Portuguese language and open new horizons of our group of students and myself.

Post 2 - REZENDE

Hi, everybody.... Writing about my second week on New York means a lot of learning.

I had a great time at this week. It was a moment for knowledge and improve.
On St. Jonhs University, my classes were wonderful. In the morning, I had classes with Dorothy - a great and intelligent teacher. In the afternoon, I had different classes and the most interesting for me it was with the professor Joyce Mandell. She show us how the phonetic and pronunciation is correct in a different point of view.
I enjoy her lecture all the time. I never have had a phonetic and pronunciation class with this focus. She mixes English and Music, and I know how important the music is in the learning process.
Other important lecture was with Mrs. Sue Peterson; she discussed about technologies at school. It was important for me because Brazilian teacher needs to effort about this theme. We have no technologies like here, but we can do it happens!
On January 17th, we visited the New York Public Library. I was amazed about that place. All things, all details are rich. I never had seen a place like that!
Yesterday, my friend Alice Xavier and me visited the MoMa. We can see a lot of Art and we have a great time there. We visited the Memorial 9/11 and make me thing a lot and remember the sad things happened here. On the other hand, I could see people here are different from Brazil because they do things that become here better and so on.
Here, in New York, all things, all people, all places are very interesting and make me fell a better person and I know when I return to Brazil, my classes will be better a lot!

Post 2 Monico

Hello all!

I'm very happy, I'm in NY, but I'm freezing here!!! I never saw something like that!!
But I'm enjoying each single day. The snow is amazing!
The class this week was full of emotion with the presentation of work, I got very nervous, but our professor, Dorothy, is so sweetheart and I managed to get better.
It is very hard to walk or visit some places here because the weather hurts so much. We visit the Public Library this week and I could see a wonderful place and beautiful history about it, I think that everybody loved to be there.
I loved to be on "The Top of Rock" , I could see all the city from there, it's an unforgetable view. The Central Park is very different of the summer, there are no leaves on the tree, but there is a different charm and different beauty in the winter.
The place that I love to visit is the Greenwich Village, where I could listen a good music and it's a good place to walk and observe the interesting architecture.

Best regards for everybody

POST.2.GOMES.PAULA JANAINA
Amazing birthday in New York

Everybody agrees that New York is a wonderful city, as well as PDPI is a great Educational Chance in our lives.I used to daydream a lot about how my life, my studies and relationships would be during the PDPI in NY, when I was in Brazil.

By the way, my birthday is on January,17th and I wondered how that day would be....far from my little boys and my Family. In my thoughts I imagined that it´d be a sad and lonely day. But it was a great surprise...
It was Friday and we had a special schedule. We were supposed to visit New York Public Library.I spoke to my Family on Skype, which made really happy, but the day was just starting...

First My PDPI friends sang "Happy Birhtday" for me in the Subway Station, then We had the chance to know NY Public Library, a wonderful place to visit or study. In the Library I saw an old map of Brazil and recognized some of the MINAS GERAIS GOLD CIRCUIT TOWNS of the 18th century. Very interesting!!!

After day I went to Times Square for the first time, took lots of pictures with my friends Vander Vilela e Robert Lima!

Later I went to the Empire State Building, while in line I had the opportunite to see photos of its construction, but when I stepped on that balcony and saw that landscape I almost lost my breath... How can I explain that incredible sight, I was speechless...

When I thought the day was happily ending, on our way back home, there was a Hip Hop Dance Group, making mini.presentations in the Subway Station. We stopped to see and took pictures, since it´s an alternative look on NY Culture.

But More gifts were about to come...
My dear PDPI friends threw a Surprising Party for me in the Amsterdam Residence and gave me some flowers...

Imagine....
Not even in my nicest daydreams, I thought of such an Unforgettable Day, like that!
Being in New York was a child dream...
How can I be so blessed to spend my 3.2 birthday here???

Such a great way to celebrate it!!!

I thank God for my health, for the PDPI and the special people He has put on my way and all He has done in my life!

Central Park: a place makes me excited!!!

Trees, grasses, monuments, lake and many things we can find in Central park it is a fantastic place.

When I visited the park the weather was not good for me because was very cold so I didn’t enjoy the landscape so much, but I took some beautiful pictures there.

This place brings peace, beauty and balances for everybody that come in the park even in winter. I walked around and experienced many emotions because one day I dreamed be there and I got it.

POST 2 - ROSELY LEITE
TO SPEAK OR NOT TO SPEAK,  THAT'S THE QUESTION!

Paraphrasing one of the most famous speech in the great writer William Shakespeare's play, which was used  to express Hamlet's hesitation in a certain moment in his life.
I may share with my classmates and people who read this blog my hesitation in the beginning of The Teachers Program in the Language Connection of St. John's University. I was afraid of speaking English and to make mistakes,Not to be understood. The lack of self-confidence was by my side and made me feel bad. I really hesitate in many situations to speak English in the classroom with my classmates or to give opinions on debates.
I have to tell you that it still happens, but I feel much more better today. I have read a lot about American Culture, I've shared ideas and comments with my classmates and teachers. I have learned a lot and I have taken notes  of everything that may help to improve my English profiency. We've had amazing classes and the PDPI Faculty and Staff have done everything to make us confortable.
That's the reason I chose this famous sentence "to be or not to be, that is the question" to paraphrase in my second post.
