MARQUES - Volunteering

  A day of hope

Saturday, February 1st, 2014 was a valuable day as a human being. The unique purpose in this life is to be useful for the others. To participate in this project in City Harvest`s Mobil Market was an enriching experience. I could see that there people that need a helping hand. As a human being we have our responsibility in this world.
We can`t pretend that there aren't any problems even in a first world country as the United States. Volunteering is an opportunity to notice that we don`t need to be rich or poor, just good willingness to share, to understand the situation they get through. This service - learning project - gave me the opportunity to communicate in an informal environment enabling me to appropriate of a second language and enhance skills such as: listening, speaking  and see how native speakers behave while working. The needy people, beyond being polite, they are grateful and thank us for  doing this gratifying work.
To give my students, on the other hand, more opportunities to develop their interpersonal growth outside the classroom we can plan a project to help abandoned old people getting nutritious food in the commerce, in the neighborhood to feed them.  For homeless people, my students and I can make a campaign during a month to get clothes, blanket, sheet. While for needy children, as a teacher, I recommend with the students the possibility to mobilize the community to donate books and encourage them the practice of reading in order to open and develop their potentialities.
