Given mission is mission accomplished!
PDPI has afforded me many amazing experiences and last Saturday I lived one of these moments: work in the City Harvest' Mobile Market. What is this? It's a program that responds to the needs for emergency food, improves access to fruits and vegetables for residents in low-income communities and provides nutrition education that will inspire affordable, healthy meal choices. For me it was a moment of reflection. To think often, wasting food and other things, while there are several people who are in need.
In relation to language skills that such a project can develop, aim mainly listening and speaking. But it is important to say it was very interesting to observe how Americans behave during volunteer work: they are polite, friendly, supportive. Those who have benefited from the program were very grateful.
At the school where I work, in Brazil, have experienced similar activities, which we call social action. Nothing related to the distribution of vegetables, but donations of clothes, toys and non-perishable foods. I think moments like these need to be encouraged in children and teenagers, not only to develop language skills, but also so that they can put into practice values such gentiliza, solidarity, respect for others, care for the environment.
A lesson for life!
