Vilela - Volunteering

Volunteer work in Brooklyn

Today we had the great opportunity to work as volunteers offering fresh veggies and fruits to poor people in the borough of Brooklyn here in New York... The place is called Bed-Stuy (just for curiosity, "Everybody hates Chris" takes place here). The "City Harvest" program aims to rescue food for New York's hunger... It was the first time I worked as a volunteer as this is not a common activity at schools in Brazil... It was a great experience for me because I could help so many people in a short period of time and it was awasome!!! We could not only work as helpers but we could practice our English with native speakers as well... I will take this experience back to Brazil and maybe start new volunteering programs with my students there... It will be a great way for them to learn about how important is for us to help others... And, of course, it's a great way for them to practice their English skills, too...
