One of the things you have to do when you are in New York City is visiting The Museum of Modern Art - MoMA. It's possible to have a very interesting overview of modern and contemporary art that the museum's collection offers.
Fortunately, I have been there and I could see art throughout the museum, including works of design, drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, etc.
Being very close to famous paintings that I used to see only in books it was superb.
