Post 5 - Oliveira

A great day today!

Some of us visited The International High School at Laguadia Community College - CUNY. A High School located in Queens. It’s a school that offers college preparation for English Language learners. A place that gives priority to students limited English proficiency who have been in the USA fewer than four years at the time of application.

This school is different from the regular ones around the country. Because the students maintain and further develop their native language skills by engaging in peer-mediate instructional activities using material and textbooks in English as well as their native language. The classroom setting is designed to foster these activities – usually students sit around tables.

Some quick facts about this school:
1. Number of students – 495
2. Number of languages spoken – 52
3. Number of countries represented – 60
4. Attendance rate – 90%

It is really a unique place to study. Just walking in the halls we can feel the different energies from every single student. It is a place where strong student help the weak ones, where everyone has equal opportunity to go further in their studies. In this school, most of the students already know or have an idea of what their career will be like.
